Hampshire Trophyman League Cup.

East Lodge 1, Mottisfont 1 (aet: Mottisfont won 4-2 on penalties).

Mottisfont's journey to play East Lodge in this semi-final was interrupted by a bad accident on the motorway which meant a 15 minute delay before they kicked off.

On a bone hard pitch both sides played entertaining football with the Font in the ascendancy for the first 10 minutes and almost took the lead when a bullet header from Robbie Abbott was somehow saved by the keeper.

After another good chance went begging the home side began to pressure the Font and Paul Fielder made a good double save and they missed a clear-cut chance when nobody could get a foot on a low, raking cross.

After 30 minutes the Font were awarded a free-kick some 25 yards out and Michael King struck a fine shot into the corner of the net. Soon after it looked like the Font would go further ahead when Mike Jackson looked certain to score but a great block tackle by the defender saved the day for the home side.

Soon after East Lodge were awarded a penalty when keeper Fielder was adjudged to have fouled their centre forward. Musslewhite blasted the resultant spot kick into the roof of the net. Michael King was then booked for persistent fouling and it ended one goal each at the interval. Going into the break Michael Jackson was called over and was shown a red card by the referee for abusive language which left the visitors dumbfounded.

At the beginning of the second half things went completely pear-shaped for the Font when they had two players sent off, firstly Michael King for a foul and his second booking. Soon after Robbie Abbott was given his marching orders after a second yellow card when he was adjudged to have committed a foul in an aerial collision.

It looked mission impossible for the Font but they started to defend from front to back and then Danny Belbin won a crunching tackle which the East Lodge forward retaliated and he too was sent off.

There was still another half an hour to go and the home side was just not able to break down the outstanding Font defence of Cook, Belbin, Cardy and Clarke, ably backed by Fryer and Cutler in midfield, who were working furiously and Alan Bundy was doing a marvellous job up front on his own.

Though they only had eight men they were making the better chances and it looked like Andy Clarke was going to take one of these but he hit the side netting.

The referee also booked a further three players and seemed to be very inconsistent and at times seemed to be losing control of the game.

The Font held out and took the game into extra time and their outstanding backs to the wall defiance continued with East Lodge just not able to break them down.

Extra time ended in a draw and the tie went to penalties. The Font took the first with Paul Cardy converting and then followed by further success by Alan Smith, Alan Clarke and Nigel Cutler. With goalkeeper Paul Fielder making two very good saves the Font won 4-2 on penalties for an outstanding result in the circumstances.

Mottisfont will play Sporting BTC in a repeat of last year's final.
