Kelly Edwards disposed of the best young judo practitioner's in Western Europe to take the gold medal at the Dutch Cup.

The Samurai Judo Club student easily coped with the champions of France, Germany, Belgium, Holland and neighbouring countries to add the gold medal to the one she clinched at the Spanish Open two weeks ago.

Now she is preparing to take on the best Eastern Europe has to offer at the Polish Open in May.

Kelly is using the Dutch, Spanish and Eastern tournaments as preparations for European Cadet Championships, which are held in Malta later in 2007.

She will be hoping to build on the the fifth place she recorded at last year's championship.

Kelly is set to be a better competitior with another year's experience under her belt.

"In Poland, Kelly will be up against the Russians and ex-Russian states, and they fight very differently to the Western Europeans," said Samurai coach Andrew Haffner.

"If Kelly can do as well there as she did in Spain and Holland, she should be one of the favourites for the European Championships."

Kelly's long term aim is to compete in the London 2012 Olympics.

Samurai's Kate Walker finished a creditable ninth at the Moscow under-20 open.

The 17-year-old lost to a Russian opponent on a split decision, which the referees later admitted was incorrect, but it was too late to stage the fight for a second time.

However, she did well on the training camp the following week, drawing with the eventual gold medallist and defeating most of the other players in her weight group.

Two more Samurai players, Grant Jones and Nicola Haywood have sampled Europe judo for the first time after returning from an international training camp in Belgium.
