A LEADING business chief has called for an increase in the number of new firms in Dudley if the area is to compete on a global stage.

Jill Parker, the enterprise director at Business Link West Midlands, is looking to boost the number of firms starting up in the region.

She hopes Business Link will increase the number of individuals and companies it helps to more than 80,000.

It is predicted over the next three years the organisation will offer start-up support to more than 2,323 people in Dudley.

Business chiefs also expect 1,382 people will access a host of training modules to develop key skills needed to run a successful company.

Ms Parker said: "The creation of new businesses is absolutely essential to the vitality of the region and we are already seeing the evidence of this with traditional industries evolving and new sectors emerging.

"There are no longer jobs for life and the advent of broadband, IT systems and home working has persuaded many people to become their own bosses.

"Currently, we are seventh out of nine regions when it comes to start-ups and this has to change.

"It is one thing helping a company start up, but it is another thing making sure they survive."
