Wincanton Town 5, Weymouth Sports 0.

DORSET Senior League runners-up Weymouth Sports finished off their season in disappointing fashion with a comprehensive defeat against the champions.

Town broke the deadlock with an overhead kick from Sam Vine but Sports also created chances with Tommy Hastie going close on two occasions.

The visitors then conceded again allowing a low corner to travel across the box to John Staite, who turned the ball in from close range.

Sports then suffered a massive blow, losing keeper Jason Carter to a broken leg. The talented stopper fell awkwardly after being challenged for a high ball.

After lengthy treatment the game resumed with defender John Cropper taking the gloves.

The second half was delayed by nearly half an hour while an ambulance crew dealt with the injured Carter and after that neither side really got going. Eventually Wincanton went on to score three more times through Chris Lock, Alex Tremlett and Paul Lock.

Losing boss Gary Bailey said: "When a player suffers a nasty injury the result becomes a little immaterial and we all wish Jason a speedy recovery.

"It was always going to be tough today after securing second-place two weeks ago and then not playing last week. It almost felt that the season had already finished and our performance showed that at times, and certain people disappointed me today.

"Having said that I am more than happy with the season overall and coming runners-up in our first year at this level is a real achievement by the players.

"Congratulations to Wincanton for winning the league, they have been the most consistent side this season and it is that level of consistency that we need to achieve here. We will now be looking to strengthen in the summer so we can take the club forward again."

Dorset FA chairman Geoff Pike presented the trophy to Town and handed Sports their runners-up medals after the contest.
