ADULTS with learning difficulties have launched a sandwich business in Weymouth.

In an initiative funded by Dorset Disability Partnership Board, 12 members of the Ridgway Day Services group have been getting creative in the kitchen to produce tasty treats at a discount rate.

"Upper Crust" now supplies freshly-made sarnies and homebaked cakes to two local groups and is hoping to expand.

The business offers a variety sandwiches for £1 each and their cakes cost 50p.

Not only is the produce freshly made on the day, but also neatly packaged in plastic containers and comes with free delivery.

Upper Crust operates out of Southill Community Centre and everyone involved has passed a level two qualification in catering.

It has the double benefit of getting people with learning difficulties out into the community and gaining valuable skills and giving people a high-quality lunch at value for money.

Ridgeway Day Services officer Marie Miller said: "It's been launched from Ridgeway Day Services by people with learning difficulties, who have all had training in catering.

"We've got 12 service users and two members of staff involved and we operate and deliver Wednesdays and Fridays.

"At the moment we're delivering to Fiveways centre and Westhaven House and we hope to expand."

She added: "We do a variety of sandwiches made on the day and freshly-baked cakes which are extremely good value for money.

"We've got all the uniforms and everything, and a top notch kitchen at Southill."

"It gives the service users self esteem, skills for dealing with money, a chance to work in the local community, promotes independence and experience of working as a team."
