Freefall Collective + Baker Brothers, Consortium, Bournemouth

Baker Brothers launch into their set with as much energy and gusto as you would expect. Big bass lines, jingling guitar, completed by saxophones and trumpets.

It's no surprise this home-town gig is packed. An old-school jazz soul style, consisting of sax and guitar solos, is nicely mixed with dynamics reminiscent of Quantic.

Several tracks feature vocalist Vanessa Freeman whose fantastic, powerful voice has Spanky Wilson undertones. The highlights for the set come in tunes such as Fantasy, where Freeman's soulful voice complements the band perfectly.

Rarely does Bourne-mouth produce a live breaks band. However, Freefall Collective consist of a DJ, guitar, bass, drums and MC that combines into an intriguing live breaks act. Within moments of coming on stage it feels as though the whole room is jumping.

It is no wonder that Freefall Collective are often found on bills of festivals and clubs. On the evidence of tonight the band throw their unique, intelligent breaks straight at the audience and do not let up throughout.

There are subtle hints of dub and funk while the sporadic usage of various instruments prevents the sound from becoming monotonous.
