A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with affray in connection with a stabbing in a busy city street.

A man, who is in his 30s, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, following the incident on Thursday.

He was last night still recovering in hospital from stab and slash wounds.

Police sealed off the road between Framwelgate Bridge and North Road, in Durham, after the incident, which happened at about 4.40pm, before scene of crime investigators moved in to examine the area for evidence.

A police spokesman said a man in his 30s had been released on police bail.

He said that a 26-year-old man had been charged with affray and would appear before Peterlee magistrates this morning.

At the time of the incident, the street had been full of shoppers, taking advantage of the good weather to stock up for Easter.

Police have now appealed for witnesses who may have seen the incident to contact them.
