Jack King hit the last-minute equaliser as Didcot Town came from behind to make it honours even against Abingdon United in yesterday's thrilling derby encounter at the Loop Meadow Stadium.

With time running out, it looked like Abingdon would do the double over their Oxfordshire neighbours, only for King's brilliant 25-yard free-kick to ruin their day.

To compound their frustration, Michael Alexis was sent off in injury time for dissent.

Although both sides are out of contention for the Southern League Division 1 South & West play-offs, this was a full-blooded encounter.

Didcot, who lost at Abingdon on New Year's Day, impressed early on, with Ray Spence looking lively up front.

After Josh Kennet fired wide of Abingdon's goal, Spence should have put Didcot ahead on 20 minutes, but flicked the ball wide when it looked easier to score.

It was all Didcot, with King scooping the ball over the bar from close-range.

At the other end, Chris Webb denied Andy Ballard, before Alexis's excellent effort whistled wide.

And on 35 minutes, Abingdon were unlucky not to score when Richard Peirson's goalbound header hit a defender on the shoulder, though they were indebted to Simon Tricker who made a superb save from King.

On 39 minutes, Didcot took the lead when Adam Learoyd fired in from 18 yards after Abingdon failed to clear Paul Powell's corner.

Seconds later, Tricker kept out Powell, before Abingdon levelled on 42 minutes when Jermaine McSporran haeded in Dean Moss's chip to the far post.

Just before the break, Tricker plunged to his left to keep out King's firecely-struck free-kick.

Didcot were still digesting their half-time teamtalk when Abingdon went ahead through Alexis after the defence failed to clear.

Seconds later, Anaclet Odhiambo, whose pace caused Didcot caused problems throughout, went close and then Ballard headed wide.

Spence had two chances to level, but somehow fired wide on each occasion.

Alexis was unlucky not to make it 3-0 on 60 minutes when he was set up by Odhiambo, only for his piledriver to crash back off the bar.

Didcot had another lucky escape on 74 minutes when Jamie Heapy's clearance went just wide of his own goal after Ballard's throw-in was not cleared.

It looked as though Didcot would slip to a rare home defeat, before King's superb free-kick from the edge of the area found the top corner.

In injury time, Abingdon were reduced to ten men when Alexis was controversially sent off for dissent, before the referee called time on the Easter thriller.
