THE first sentencing has taken place at South Essex's new Domestic Violence Court.

The court, which will run every Wednesday within Grays Magistrates' Court, is one of 53 specialist courts introduced throughout England and Wales.

James Shea, 22, and his girlfriend Katie Clarke had been drinking at Bonds, in Basildon's Festival Leisure Park, while watching England versus Ecuador in the World Cup last June.

The couple had a row and made their way back to Miss Clarke's flat where the argument flared up and Shea attacked Miss Clarke injuring her head, legs and arms.

He was found guilty of assault at Basildon Crown Court last month and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, at the new court.

Shea of Tinklerside, Basildon, must also complete 120 hours unpaid work and pay costs of £625.

A £200 compensation offer was made to Miss Clarke, but she turned it down.

Outside the court, Miss Clarke reflected upon the experience and told how she is standing by Shea.

She said: "It was a terrible experience, but I feel it was down to James's drinking.

"He now has it under control. He is a good, hard working man and we are determined to work on our relationship. We are both attending relationship classes. We have come on a long way."

Shea added: "I'm trying to turn my life around.

"I am working full-time and also living a healthier lifestyle. I am sorry for what I did and committed to working things out with Katie."
