ARMED police used electric shock equipment to subdue a man at a pub at the weekend.

The man is alleged to have threatened to kill another person in the pub.

Officers used the Taser equipment on the 42-year-old before arresting him.

Police attended the White Lion pub in Congleton High Street shortly after 7pm on Saturday.

Officers had received information that a man in the pub had alleged to have been in possession of a gun.

He is alleged to have made threats to kill to another person in the pub, and armed officers went to the premises.

The officers included members of Cheshire Police's Vector unit, who were there to ensure the safety of other members of the public who were in the pub at the time.

"As a result of the operation a 42-year-old man from Macclesfield was arrested following the deployment of Taser," said a police spokeswoman.

"Nobody was injured during the course of the incident."

The man was taken into custody and interviewed by police about the incident.

He was released without charge regarding the allegations of threats to kill.

He was released on police bail until Thursday May 17.

This is pending further inquiries following allegations of theft made against the man by customers who were in the pub at the time.

A Taser is an electroshock gun which fires projectiles that administer an electric shock.

It is used by the police for subduing a person or a suspect, and may disrupt superficial muscle functions.
