CULVERHOUSE Cross must be the most congested urban traffic bottleneck in South Wales. This is a junction of six roads, four of which are controlled by traffic light access, with further traffic lights into the roundabout.

Often traffic given the green light to exit the roundabout is held up by traffic blocking the road from the M4 exit.

This situation will inevitably worsen as more people aspire to become motorists, without further increase in traffic attributable to the Airport, developments in St Athan, Cardiff City AFC, the Cardiff Sports Village and Cardiff Bay.

It appears that the 'powers that be' have looked at the situation, recognised the problems but have decided that they are insoluble.

However, we are now faced with a planning application from ITV, proposing a huge development between Culverhouse Cross and Wenvoe Village.

This consists of a new community of 212 houses and two hotels with the provision of 220 beds. Over 200 residents attended an open meeting in Wenvoe on April 26, 2007.

None supported the application. The opposition was based on good planning objections affecting the Wenvoe community.

We in the Vale would also be affected by the proposed development. Another 500 cars a day using the junction will cause further congestion and delays to people using the A48 and A4050.

Problems on the A4050 will mean that motorists will be tempted to use rural lanes or worsen the traffic problems in Dinas Powys.

In addition to the valid planning objections at Wenvoe, no further development of urban or retail facilities should be entertained at Culverhouse Cross, until the present problems are addressed and future traffic increases are acknowledged.
