For the first time in years, Falmouth cinema goers will be able to see a major Hollywood blockbuster on its first day of release without leaving the town.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is the third instalment of Disney's global smash hit, starring screen idols Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly.

It is certain to be one of 2007's biggest grossing movies, and will be shown at The Poly for two weeks from its release on Thursday May 24 including three times a day during the half-term holidays.

The announcement is a major coup for the 180-seat venue and is evidence of film distributors' growing confidence in The Poly's ability to attract impressive cinema audiences.

The news comes just weeks after The Poly featured among the UK's top three cinemas showing multiple Oscar winner Pan's Labyrinth.

Charlie Cartwright, The Poly's cinema manager, said: "So far, 2007 is easily breaking all The Poly's box office records for cinema - if things continue at the same rate, over 35,000 people will have seen a film here by Christmas. This sustained success is the reason we can now look at showing major Hollywood blockbusters in Falmouth on their first release date."

Poly Chief Executive Richard Glover explained: "The Poly is not here to compete with big multiplex chains. We remain an arts cinema, and we will continue to show our customary, unique mix of just really interesting films, both art-house and Hollywood.

"However, the fact we can now attract these huge, blockbuster movies on their day of release is an important feather in our cap, and will help us to offer even more choice and convenience to the local community. It proves we mean business, and is another signal to people in Falmouth that they do have a really good, local cinema - and if they haven't tried us lately, perhaps they should."

The Poly's Box Office is already taking advance bookings for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on 01326 212300, and film and live listings throughout Cornwall are available now online, at www.thepoly.org - with online booking expected to start in the next few weeks.
