A Territorial Army captain will soon be pounding the pavements to raise money to help save people's sight.

David Daniel, 48, of Brightwell Avenue, Westcliff, is preparing to take to the streets of the capital in the London Marathon later this month.

Mr Daniel works as the head of IT at the Institute of Ophthalmology, which is linked with London's world-famous Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He is undertaking the 26-mile challenge to raise funds for the Fight for Sight campaign.

He said: "Training is starting to get difficult, as I have picked up a slight back injury and my knees are starting to hurt now from all the mileage I have been running.

"Nevertheless, I'm still going strong and look forward to a reasonable time on the day - around three-and-half to four hours, hopefully."

When he is not working, Mr Daniel serves as a captain with the Honourable Artillery Company, a TA regiment based in the City.

He said: "I was a regular soldier for 25 years and have been in the TA for eight years.

"I missed the camaraderie when I left the regulars.

"However, I was fortunate a suitable appointment became available at the TA barracks which is only 400 metres from the place where I work."
