A SCHOOL in Westy is celebrating after it became one of the first in the town to achieve the national healthy school standard.

Teachers, pupils and parents at St Augustine's Catholic Primary School worked together to help the school bag the prestigious award that aims to get schools to promote healthy living and wellbeing.

To win the standard, the school had to demonstrate its dedication on four key themes in a whole-school approach. The school had to address the health needs of not just the pupils, but also staff and the wider school community.

Tackling the four key themes, the school had to incorporate personal, social and health education, which included sex and relationship education and drug issues, into school time.

Pupils also looked at healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing, which looked at problems such as bullying.

The healthy school accreditat- ion was led by assistant head teacher Ruth Potts. She said: "Being a healthy school has real benefits for our pupils and community; evidence shows that healthy pupils achieve well at school."

The school is now looking to continue its mission to bring more benefit to the lives of pupils, staff and parents.
