While being treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Sophie Pollock pledged to walk from John o' Groats to Lands End to raise funds for cancer research. Sadly she never achieved her ambition.

In February the 14-year-old scout from Tadworth died of a brain tumour having undergone months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

As a way of coping with her grief, her mum decided to keep her promise to trek 1,100 miles through the heart of Britain.

Carol Pollock set out on April 8, Sophie's birthday, with the intention of raising £10,000 for other children afflicted by a brain stem potine glyoma.

This week Sophie's brother, Stephen, said: "Because of her commitment to Sophie, and to give her something to focus on, Carol decided to maintain this commitment and to undertake the walk for more than three months."

Her travels, on which she will be joined by friends and family, are being charted in a weblog. In a recent entry, detailing her approach to Bodmin Moor, Carol wrote: "The lowlight of the day was being attacked by chickens, hell-bent on eating our lunch, and the last few miles were a steep hike to St Brewards.

"The post office-cum-internet café was a hub of activity where we got lots of advice, ranging from a breezy you'll be fine, just keep heading east' to I don't want to alarm you, but the mist can come down at any time'".
