York RI Tuesday/Thursday A' sprang a major surprise in men's division one of the York Badminton League with a 6-3 win over leaders York RI Monday/Wednesday.

Mike Edwards and Gary Routledge put in their best effort of the season with three straight wins against stiff opposition to return 126-84.

York RI Monday/Wednesday regained their form with a 5-4 away win over Clifton A', followed by an 8-1 win at Shepherds. The best return came from Paul Turner and Pete Crosland who took three straight wins against Shepherds to record 126-102.

Promotion-chasing Clifton B' notched an 8-1 home win over Selby/Drax B' in men's two. Phil Sinton and Paul Waterhouse easily took the best home return with 126-67. John Prickett and Naz Shefta stopped the Selby rout with a face-saving 12-21, 21-17, 21-15 over Tony Tate and Dave Rogers.

Clifton C', second in men's three, put in a powerful display to dispose of Terry's 9-0 at Millthorpe School. Mark Screeton and James Neary were the pick of the Clifton pairs with three straight wins for a total of 126-61.

Clifton Ladies excelled in a 6-3 win at Huntington in ladies one. The opening pair of Karen Broster and Shelagh Barker led the way for the visitors with three straight wins for a total of 126-80.

Market Weighton enhanced their promotion chances in ladies two with a narrow 5-4 home win over Fulfordgate. Weighton's match-winners were Sue Smith and Miriam Beales, who recorded their best return of the season with 126-40 in straight sets.

Selby/Drax A', who are fighting to retain their place in mixed one, boosted their chances with a 6-3 home win over Clifton B'. Alison Dinsdale and Phil Brunyard set the Selby standard with a superb return of 126-78 in a high-pressure match.

Tadcaster 86 A', who are two points away from a promotion place, enhanced their hopes with a 6-3 win at Sandburn Hall. Jo Wade and Chris Schofield took all three Sandburn wins for 159-132, but Lesley Rowlatt and Andrew Cooper sealed the overall victory with a 16 and 16 over Andrew and Nicola Daffern.

Nestlé Rowntree B' gained mid-table safety in mixed three with an 8-1 home win over luckless Huntington B'.

Mark Barker and Brenda Drummond topped the confectionery averages with 126-83, while Lisa Turner and Alistair Jewison stopped the whitewash with a 21-14, 24-26, 24-22 success over June Palmer and Phil Pearce.

Mixed four champions St John's ended their season with a 5-4 home win over third-placed Selby Jubilee B'. James Smith and Anne Geilen swung the match in the final rubber with a 15 and 16 win over Paul Newnham and Lynne Dawson.

Middlethorpe used home advantage in mixed five to score a 5-4 win over Tadcaster 86 B'. Rob Davie and Marina Hilditch took three Tadcaster wins for 171-148, but Ian Thompson and Brenda Pooleman won the final rubber and the match with an 11 and 14 triumph over Maria Parks and Kevin Trail.
