A Melksham nightspot has decided to continue its support for some of the county's most disadvantaged and vulnerable children.

Last year The Tavern, in the Market Place, decided to adopt children's charity Barnardo's South West and raised more than £1,000 through raffles, collections and fancy dress nights.

Now the town centre venue wants to beat this figure and is seeking support from local businesses.

In particular, it is looking for donations for a grand raffle to launch this year's fundraising appeal. Potential raffle prizes can be offered to Tavern manager John Stewart on 01225 709932.

Mr Stewart said: "It was a great success and proved to be one of our most successful fundraising nights.

"We would like to run a similar event this year but with even more and better prizes, hopefully including many donations by other local businesses.

"The greater the number of prizes, the greater the amount we can raise to support local children and young people."

In addition, The Tavern is happy to consider other fundraising events suggested by customers themselves, such as sponsored headshaves or competitions and quizzes.

lBarnardo's South West in partnership with Westlea Housing Association, is administering a pioneering new scheme to develop a range of activities and support groups for families across north Wiltshire.

The new Wiltshire Community Development service is looking for volunteers to work directly with children and families or to support management committees.
