A COUPLE who liked Barnoldswick so much they moved there twice celebrate 60 years of marriage today.

Self-confessed offcumdens Cyril and Doris Bellwood moved to the town from Morley and Wakefield respectively in the 1940s. After both worked for Rolls-Royce, they moved away again but came back to Barlick to make it their home.

Mr and Mrs Bellwood met at work, but it was almost three years before they started going out together. After travelling on the same bus, romance blossomed and they started dating and going for trips to the cinema together.

The couple married on March 22, 1947 at St Andrew's Church in Wakefield while Mr Bellwood was serving in the Royal Air Force.

The retired engineer said: "It was a terrible winter. It was piled up with snow outside the church door."

Mr Bellwood said he was happy to have made Barnoldswick his home.

He said: "We've been accepted now, but it took a while. We were treated as aliens for a bit!"

Mr and Mrs Bellwood, who are both 84, have enjoyed many holidays abroad and Mrs Bellwood is a keen darts player with the Royal British Legion club in Barnoldswick.

The couple have a large family with two sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and another two on the way this year.

One of their sons and one of their grandchildren will making the journey over from America this weekend for a party at Ghyll Golf Club.
