A FEISTY woman who used to ride a motorbike in the 1920s has just celebrated her 103rd birthday.
Edna Birkin marked her milestone surrounded by friends and family at the Longfields Care Home in Fanbridge, where she has lived for the last seven years.
Mrs Birkin, who is a mother of one, a grandmother of two and a great grandmother of four, was born in Halstead in 1904.
She married her husband Fred, who passed away 17 years ago, and moved to Manor House Farm in Tiptree Heath where she became a farmers wife and ran a pick your own strawberry field.
Her granddaughter, 41-year-old Susan Tod, described her as a fiery, mischievous and very determined woman.
She said: "She has been a very adventurous woman and was a real goer in her time who was always up to date with the latest fashions.
"She was also involved with the WI and the Church and had a real for flower arranging.
Wendy Ward, a team leader at Longfields Care Home, who cares daily for Mrs Birkin said: "She is a sweet lady who is very healthy and loves her family visits."
