NEIGHBOURS left traumatised by the death of an 18-year-old man are relaunching a campaign for traffic-calming measures.

Residents of Winn Road, Lee, are acting after Billy Ivings, from Catford, died on April 1 following a collision on their road at 3am on March 24.

Mr Ivings had been riding up Exford Road on a grey Gilera Runner scooter with a friend called Josh when they collided with a Ford Focus as they pulled into Winn Road.

The pair flew off the bike and the car ploughed through a brick wall into a garden.

One resident, who does not want to be named, says the teenager was unconscious and bleeding from his ears as paramedics took him away to Lewisham Hospital.

According to residents, Winn Road has been plagued by accidents caused by drivers who travel well above the 30mph speed limit.

There have been more than 10 accidents they are aware of on the road, which connects to the A20, in the past year.

In 2000, News Shopper reported how a bus drove into a garden.

Following further incidents a petition with more than 50 signatures was presented to Lewisham Council in 2002, in a bid to get drivers to reduce their speed, but no action was taken.

Kristina Green, who wants to get residents together to force Lewisham Council to take action, said: "In a way, I feel responsible.

"We should have made sure the council did something about this at the time.

"It is frightening walking up here when it is rush hour.

"All the cars speed and it is not safe for children."

The 58-year-old grandmother-of-one added: "It is devastating this has happened and has left us traumatised.

"We'll start campaigning again and do everything we can to get the council to listen."

Josh, who survived the collision, left a tribute on a lamppost near the crash site which read: "God, if I could swap with you, I would.

"Billy, I will never forget you and one day I will meet you again."

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses following this incident.

"It is inconclusive at this stage which of the men was driving the scooter at the time of the collision."

Anyone with information should call the Catford collision investigation unit on 020 8285 1547.

A council spokesman said: "We would be happy to listen to residents' views and consider whether traffic-calming measures would be appropriate for the area."
