SIR - H Clough rightly questions the large sums of money that the BBC pays so-called "stars" (T&A, April 26).

As far as I'm concerned the only way to stop the BBC from chucking my money away is not to give it to them in the first place.

So in June when I am invited to renew my TV licence I shall decline the offer and inform Auntie, as I'm obliged to do, that for 12 months at least my TV will be used only as a monitor.

Then I'll commence to watch the many tapes and DVDs that have accumulated over the years.

To be honest this will not be a wrench as I watch very little TV anyway.

Furthermore, it has long been my intention to read/re-read a store of material "saved for a rainy day", consisting of books, magazines - and dare I say it - "Old Boys' comics".

"I'll show the bounders."
