A FULL round of elections in Eden could lead to big changes in the valley, with all 30 district seats up for grabs and more than 70 parish councils going to the vote.

Of those district seats contested, the Labour party has a noticeable absence while there is likely to be a close fight between Independent, Conservative and Liberal Democrat candidates.

Trevor Ladhams (Ind) is sitting tight in Kirkby Stephen, where Nick Locke (Lib Dem) and Glenys Lumley (Cons)) join him in the running for the town's two vacancies, while Askham Tory Joan Lowis faces a challenge for her seat in the form of Lib Dem John Stones.

In the Appleby (Bongate) ward, Lilian Cook (Lib Dem) is hoping to outdo current incumbent Ella Langan (Ind) in the polls while in Crosby Ravensworth Brian Morris (Ind) has been nominated along with the serving Conservative Joan Raine.

Labour Party candidate Eric Wilson has issued a challenge to Kirkby Thore member Henry Sawrey-Cookson (ind) meanwhile, while over in the wards of Orton with Tebay and Shap, the Lib Dem faction (Margaret Wilcox and Neil Hughes) face competition from two conservative candidates (Peter Knowles and Tom Lowther).
