A TEENAGER has been given a £50 fine for flouting Bromsgrove town centre's alcohol ban.

The 18-year-old male is the first to receive a fixed penalty ticket for drinking in the alcohol-free zone since it was introduced on January 31.

He was one of about 15 people to be given warnings but received the ticket after being caught breaking the ban for a second time.

The alcohol-free zone covers the areas from Sanders Park to Bromsgrove Cemetery, and All Saint's Church to College Road.

It enables the police to confiscate open bottles and cans within the designated zone.

Failure to hand over the alcohol is an arrestable offence, for which the maximum penalty is £500.

Policing officer for the town centre PC Spike Jenkins said: "Warnings are given for first offences and as this incident clearly demonstrates, when they are not heeded we will not hesitate to hand out fixed penalty tickets and hit people in the pocket."
