THEY were there when Saints held the FA Cup aloft at Wembley and when Lawrie Mac's boys came second in the top league.

So, after more than four decades, it was good that Southampton Hospital Radio commentators Bryan Dowding, 76 and 85-year-old Ken Fielder could leave on a high.

Saints' qualification for the Premiership play-offs was a fitting time for the the veterans to hang up their headphones.

The pair have decided to call it a day to allow a new generation of commentators to come through.

Station chairman Roy Stubbs said: "Their expertise and delightful commentary won them admirers, and their advice generously given will linger on through the new lads who readily acknowledge their masterly skill in description and of impressive knowledge in recall of the many years of club history."
