A WEST Country legend returns to his roots on Bank Holiday Monday, when Vince Woodman, from Chipping Sodbury near Bristol, wheels out his famous Cologne Capri at the Castle Combe Circuit's Springtime Raceday.

Vince began his racing career at Castle Combe in 1965, when he raced a Ford Lotus Cortina in the Special Saloon race. He then established himself as one of the West Country's top drivers, winning various races and the Special Saloon Class A championship on two occasions in 1977 and 1980.

Meanwhile, Vince's international reputation was growing and he became a regular and successful competitor in Touring Car races throughout the world, often linked with the Ford marque.

One of his best known cars was the Cologne Capri, an ex-works car, built by Broadspeed in 1973. Having undergone a full restoration, the car will return to its spiritual home on Bank Holiday Monday where it will compete, as a 'one-off' in Class D of the savesometax.co.uk Castle Combe Special GT Championship.

As well as the Capri, the class has an interesting variety of production based saloon and sports cars including a trio of Ferrari 360s and a pair of Marlins.

The other classes are similarly diverse, though the City of Bath yield two Guys in Class A, namely Messrs Woodward and Parr. The former has his first outing this year in the Motorvations Jade Trackstar, driven to second place at the opening round by Marcus Pye. Guy Parr has his second outing in his Radical SR8, in which he finished 5th overall and second in class, first time out.

Class B, for up to 2 litre sports racing cars, is incredibly competitive. Bristol's Thomas Richardson set pole and led for all but the last lap at Easter in his Nemesis RME 02, his off promoting Westbury's Shane Marshall to an unexpected victory in his Mallock P21.

Always impressive is Trowbridge's Mark Funnell in his road going Lotus Exige in Class C. His principal opposition is Bristols Tony Michael in his Westfield, the pair taking first and second in class at the Easter meeting.

Whilst the 'Special GTs' are reason enough to get the best seats at Quarry corner, the meeting has a full programme of other races, all centred around Club racing.

The Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford 1600 championship encounter has Ed Moore from Bradford on Avon back for another battle with the likes of Robert Hall from Bromyard. Moore took a dominant win at Easter after Hall's demise but has still to decide on whether to pursue the whole championship.

Waiting in the wings if he does not will be Saltford's Steven Jensen who took a Class B win and second overall last time in his family run Swift SC92 and Brattons Ben Norton, another Class A contender who brought his new and unique Spectrum to 3rd at Easter.

Chepstow's Nick Jones has his Class A Van Diemen RF00 run by the Gloucester based Kevin Mills racing team whilst Bath's Matt McKillop was very strong at the Easter meeting, taking second in Class B in his Swift SC95.

Leading Class C contender should be Kington St Michael's Jim Hamilton in his Van Diemen RF89, with Chippenham's Adam Higgins likely to improve in his similar car in only his second race.

The 100th ever National Mobile Windscreens Saloon Car Championship race features Nailsworth's Keith Murray after his dominant victory last time in his fast starting Audi A4 Quattro, with Atworth's Robert Ballard looking for a straightforward race in his even more powerful Mitsubishi Evo RS7.

Bridgwater's Tony Dolley surprised the four wheel drive runners with his pace at the last round in his Peugeot 206, taking a strong 3rd behind Mark Harrison and is joined this time by Bristol's Mark Wyatt in his superb Astra.

Calne's Tony Hutchings will be cut and thrust with Bournemouth's Carleton Williams after a tense Class C battle last time out between the MG ZR and Corsa, Hutchings coming out on top, having been beaten to pole. Making his debut is Wiltshire College student, Sean Dillon in a Saxo VTS.

Bath's Oliver Lewis took class D pole last time in his Peugeot 106 but retired, whilst Chippenham's William Di Claudio has a similar car and took fastest lap, despite a standard engine.

Warminster's Geoff Fern will have another busy day swopping between his Van Diemen RF89 and TFR07 for both the 1600 and 2 litre classes of the Monoposto Championship races. Stroud's Jim Blockley is one of the opposition in the 2 litre Bowman BC3, with Swindon's Bill Janson out in a Jamun 1.8 Zetec in the 1800cc class.

The Formula Vee Championship race has Bristol drivers, John Hughes and Ben Evans, whilst the Locost championship features Melksham's Matt Cherrington, Swindon's Christopher Sheerin and Weston Zoyland's Glenn Boyer in the Carrot Cruncher Special! Corsham's James Johnson is the local representative in the RGB Championship, catering for motorcycle engined machines such as his Fisher Fury.

The Stock Hatch Championship race has a variety of local entrants, including Bath's Amy Barker in a Saxo VTR, Malmesburys Tony and Edward Cooper in a pair of Nova Gsis and Nailsea's Tim Wilson in a Peugeot 205 GTi.

Monday's action starts at 8.40 am with qualifying, racing getting under way from 13.00 pm.

Admission prices are £15 for adults, £7-50 for OAPs, £2-50 for paddock transfer, whilst accompanied children under 15 are admitted free.
