Southend Swifts' under-16 girls basketball team made the relatively short journey to Brentwood as they sought to maintain their unbeaten National League status.

And they achieved this goal in style with a 93-46 success.

Now, with five games to go in the regular season, Swifts hold a remarkable 15-0 record.

However, they need to ensure no slip-ups in preparation for the end of season play-offs.

Southend's all court game brought immediate rewards as they took an early 11-4 lead, including a Rachel Armstrong three-point shot.

The hosts fought back to 13-8 before eight straight points for Jennie Rodgers extended Swifts' advantage.

Further baskets from Hannah Culwick and Emily Robson helped them to a 26-15 first quarter lead.

A 9-0 run, with four from Christina Gaskin and a Maisie Elston three-pointer, should have set up a comfortable victory.

But Southend's desire to give all of their players time on the court made for a slightly disjointed display from the Swifts.

At half time the scoreline stood at 38-27, far below Swifts' normal tally of points.

The half time team talk had the desired effect as they once again showed their speed and dexterity.

Two three-pointers from Armstrong helped the lead move out to 45-31 and, after Fire scored five of the next seven, super Southend simply took the game over.

Once again pushed on by the defensive intensity of captain Rebecca Brough, they went on a 29-2 scoring spree, with Rodgers contributing a remarkable 20 individual points.

The inspirational young England international star showed her huge range of skills with scores from all angles and ranges, culminating with a three point shot.

The score, with one period remaining, stood at 76-38 to the visitors.

The final quarter was a rather more subdued effort, after the 38 points in the previous 10 minutes, but Culwick contributed a further seven.

And, with all 12 players registering on the scoresheet, Swifts ended convincing winners in an exciting game by 93 points to 46.

Rodgers 32 (in just 24 minutes of playing time), Armstrong and Culwick 13 apiece, plus Brough 11 and 15 steals, led the scorers.

The under-14 boys hosted Brentwood Fire and went down 68-66 in a thrilling match.

Joe Hart (32) as usual led the Swifts' scorers, while Thulani Sibanda contributed 14.

Reliable Hart then went on to contribute his usual 30 points as Swifts lost 83-49 at Westminster Warriors on Sunday.
