Primary schools are set to benefit from a £2.5million investment in building improvements.

West Sussex County Council has earmarked the funds to carry out work at schools in Littlehampton, following promises made last year.

County councillor Mark Dunn, responsible for schools, said: "I am pleased to confirm that we are putting our money where our mouth is.

"Headteachers and council officers are working together to explore the various ways we can improve education in the town and this work will carry on through the summer term."

Coun Dunn assured parents there would be a wide consultation on any plans and added he hoped further funding sources could be found for additional work.

Two of the town's primary schools, St Catherine's Catholic and Flora McDonald Junior, have been placed into special measures by Ofsted inspectors who have deemed their performance unacceptable.

Littlehampton has been earmarked to house the first academy in West Sussex in a £27million proposal to replace Littlehampton Community School.

The school and council have been in discussions with possible sponsors for the project.
