Put brakes on traffic plans

Oh no! Not another half-baked traffic scheme dreamed up by our local councils ("Traffic Ban Will Transform City", October 21).

The incompetence of our traffic planners has been obvious ever since the Oxford Transport Strategy made such a mess of things.

Remember the slogan: "It''ll be terrific without the traffic"? It wasn't.

Then there was the chaos they created near the railway station with Frideswide Square which, your report informs us, is to be "remodelled...to improve traffic flow" — no doubt costing a hefty chunk of our council taxes.

The county council is proposing to pedestrianise Queen Street and St Aldate's (and then George Street, Broad Street and Magdalen Street), which will doubtless become as dangerously full of illegal cyclists as Cornmarket is at present (which neither councils nor police seem able to control).

Buses will be forced to take even more roundabout routes, spewing out more pollution, while bus stops will be less convenient for people coming in and out of the city centre — especially the disabled and infirm. How will disabled drivers be able to get anywhere near the city centre?

Oh, and "a bus-turning circle will be installed at the city end of St Giles". What a brilliant idea!

Is that really what we want in one of the most congested areas of the city?

There are a couiple of answers to this age old problem, firstly make the park and ride completely free, secondly make the buses from Botley road stop at the train station, people can walk into town, from Kidlington at the end of St Giles and Abingdon road entry around by the Crown Court, this way no buses go into town.

...... And the Headington/ Cowley end at The Plain. That's all well and good if you are able to but some of us cannot walk that far.I agree with the termini points but feel that there should be some sort of shuttle into the centre from these points preferably non polluting type of vehicle like the 'Gatwick Shuttle' but at ground level which could link these termini to enable cross routes to other parts of the city. The ring road could also be used for a transport route with junctions/interfaces to the arterial routes such as Banbury/ Abingdon and Botley roads into the City termini. So from Kidlington say you could get a bus into Banbury Road interface change to the ring road bus to get to Cowley or if you wanted a slower journey time go via the Banbury road to the St Gile's termini tke the shuttle to The Plain changing at Carfax and then get on the Cowley road designated bus. With satelite navigation and communications that are available today it should be possible to co-ordinate the various routes and operate similarly to how the railways should operate using a proper timetable.

Of course before the Oxford Transport Strategy everything was perfect Tony, wasn't it? Just thousands of legal, stinking cars and buses clogging up Cornmarket instead of all these evil cyclists and pedestrians which make it so dangerous now. Well I'm glad that you are not in charge of traffic management in Oxford, it seems all we would get is your 'ME' lane which noone else is allowed to use.
