CRICKET: Oxon clash abandoned

Oxfordshire's Minor Counties Championship Western Division clash with Wales was abandoned as a draw after more rain at Banbury today.

The hosts crawled to 135-6 off 66 overs in their first innings before the umpires finally brought the match to a close at 2.30pm.

Resuming on 85-3, a delayed start saw eight overs lost straight away and the players were on and off throughout.

Craig Haupt added two runs to his overnight score before he was bowled by Michael Reed for 19.

Richard Kaufman could not repeat his match-saving century against Wiltshire in the last Championship game, falling lbw to Reed for 7.

Richard West top-scored with 29 before being caught by Tom Maynard, the son of former England batsman Mat-thew Maynard.

Oxon closed 229 runs behind Wales, who were never really able to capitalise on their first innings total of 364-9.

The next Championship outing for Oxfordshire is against Cornwall at Challow & Childrey from July 26 to 28.

They then complete their programme with trips to Herefordshire at Colwall and Berkshire at Newbury.

Seems to have been a strange game. I went down for the last session on Sunday and after work on Monday and Tuesday. Saw Kaufman get four wickets, was quite unlucky not to get a few more actually. Wales seemed to have a pretty young side out, their seamers looked quite good. Maybe wasn't the best idea for Oxon to only pick one seamer? Surely Jack Brooks or Stuart Hole would be worth picking just to see how they went? And then when I went down on Monday, the ground was bone dry but no players to be seen! Story was the same again today, but having said that there was a lot of rain shortly after.

Jack is playing against Kent 2nds and Stuart was unavailable as far as I know but you are right, there must be other bowlers around

I'm alright in Div 5. Might be a fraction out of my depth though :-)

I guess the best seamer in Cherwell div 1 from an Oxon club would be Lee Mason at Horspath. And he used to play for Bucks!

Cant think of any more off the top of my head.

Dont think there are many in the hole of the Cherwell League. Unless they are O/S.

Ah, I've already had a look at Trevor this season. Popping it out there waiting for the batsman to hang himself

What a bowler though, picking up all those wickets on that perfect batting strip at Wallingford.

Think you may be spot on there, General Oxon.

Someone told me Lee Mason had nabbed 20wkts in first half of season. Pretty impressive I would have thought, if true. Anyone know if that is the case?

So we all agreed there are few bowlers, has anyone seen a keeper with any potential to take over when the captain calls it a day or any batsmen worthy of a place in the top 5, i haven't seen any of those in the cherwll either!

Stuart Hole should have been made the Pro then we would have his commitment. Where is Rob Cunliffe?
