Oxford United’s Greg Leigh scored for his country for the first-ever time this week.

The left-back was playing for Jamaica who were taking on the United States in the semi-final of the Concacaf Nations League in the early hours of Friday morning.

Taking place at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, the match was as dramatic as they come with Jamaica taking an extremely early lead through Leigh.

Fulham’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid was played into the American 18-yard box on the right before playing in a cross to the far corner of the six-yard box.

Leigh rose high and headed home to give Jamaica the lead inside just 60 seconds which was a lead that the side held until the very last minute of normal time.

USA took a corner kick on the left with Christian Pulisic delivering a ball into the box and finding defender Miles Robinson.

Robinson then headed the ball towards the centre of the six-yard box but his attempt was then deflected off Burke and past Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake.

In extra time the Americans found two further goals to bury Leigh’s side and book their place in the Concacaf Nations League final later this month.

Borussia Dortmund’s Gio Reyna picked up a loose ball in the Jamaica half and deftly picked out Haji Wright who was making a run into the box and the striker placed a left-footed shot goalwards.

The same duo united once more for USA’s third as Reyna fed through Wright who, after a heavy first touch, turned and fired goalward into the right side of the net in the 109th minute.

It proved fatal for Jamaica but both Leigh and his teammates can be proud of their battling performance which left everything out on the pitch.

Leigh’s goal was his first in Jamaican colours having made a total of eight appearances for the Reggae Boyz after debuting back in 2020.

The defender’s form for United this season has been good with six goals and 29 appearances in all competitions.

Des Buckingham’s side find themselves in sixth position in the EFL League One table after a run of mixed form before the international break.

Confident wins against Cheltenham Town and Port Vale were sandwiched between a 5-0 drubbing away to Bolton Wanderers.

United are next in action on Friday night as they take on Shrewsbury away from home.
