Oxford United could lose five players on free transfers this summer as their contracts are due to expire at the end of the season.

The club continue to battle for a play-off spot and a spot in the Championship would play a key part in the club’s transfer strategy.

According to Transfermarkt, United have five players who will see their deals at the club run out in the summer and therefore could for free.

The five are Josh Murphy, Marcus McGuane, Kyle Edwards, Joe Bennett and James Henry.

Murphy has hit a rich vein of form and has netted four goals in eight games, with his latest strike coming in United’s 2-0 win at Port Vale.

The 29-year-old Norwich City academy graduate is now nearing the end of his two-year deal after his contract expired at Cardiff City in 2022 following a reported £10million move to the Welsh side.

Midfielder McGuane also sees his U’s contract expire this summer, although it is widely understood that the club hold a one-year option, meaning the situation is less pressing than if McGuane was a regular free agent.

Jamaican fullback Edwards joined the club on a season-long loan last September from Ipswich before making his move permanent after being released from his contract with the Tractor Boys in January.

Bennett joined the U’s on a short-term deal in December which was then extended during the January transfer window until the end of this season.

And finally, 34-year-old Henry joined the club in 2017 following his release from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The winger has played more than 250 competitive appearances for the U’s and during that time he has scored 56 goals.
