HEADINGTON continued their domination of Oxfordshire competitions by winning the Summertown Trophy.

In a ten-team event, sponsored by Oxford Auto Dents, Headington A, who had already achieved the league and cup double, succeeded their B team.

The sides, including first-time qualifiers Charlbury, Burford, and Summertown, played each other over seven ends in a round-robin format, to compete for a share of more than £1,000 in prize money.

After drawing 7-7 with their A team in their opener, Headington B recorded three impressive wins to be comfortably ahead on plus 20 at lunch.

Last year’s runners-up Watlington A lost heavily to Charlbury in their opening game, but then remained unbeaten for the rest of the day.

With Headington B having faded badly, it was a three horse race going into the last round of matches.

Headington A led the field on plus 30, Watlington picked up 14 shots in their penultimate game to go second, while West Witney had an outside chance.

With just one end to go all three were still in contention, as Headington A trailed West Witney and Watlington led Headington B.

However, Nick Rae-Welsh’s four of Ian Snowdon, Simon Hastings and Ray Gaskins won a crucial last end to secure Headington A the first prize.

Shane Cooper, in his last game for Watlington, picked up the Astall Ley trophy in second place, while West Witney finished third.

Final positions: 1 Headington A +28, 2 Watlington A +24, 3West Witney+18.
