OXFORDSHIRE Under 17s agonisingly missed out on the ECB County Championship Division 2B title by a single point, despite a superb performance against Bedfordshire at Potton Town.

Oxon needed 24 points to overtake Buckinghamshire to land the title – but could manage only 23, finishing just five runs short of earning the final batting bonus point to secure the crown.

The result meant Oxon finished level on points with Bucks, who took the title as they had won their head-to-head match earlier in the season.

Cameron King took 4-32 and George Tait 4-56 as Bedfordshire were bowled out for 270.

Dan Hall (50), Charlie Oakey (49) and Oli Shaw (48) helped Oxon to 304, before the hosts were dismissed for 215 as Joe Bleasdale and Luke Maslen took three wickets apiece.

Oxfordshire needed 150 for the title, but with only 34 overs left, finished agonisingly on 145-9.

Their consolation came when their ECB Under 17 Cup match was abandoned – ensuring they topped the group and get a home semi-final on Sunday, August 19 against either Leicestershire, Northumberland or Cumbria.

A superb 120 from Joe Travis and 100 not out from Luke Heritage gave Oxfordshire Saxons Under 14s a 139-run win over Pembrokeshire in the Bromsgrove Festival.
