EVEN a visit from Pakistan’s Test opener Azhar Ali could not inspire Oxfordshire Under 11s to victory against Gloucestershire at St Edward’s School.

Led by Henry Welch’s spell of 2-10 from six overs, Oxon must have been pleased after restricting their opponents to 132-6 from their 40 overs.

But they struggled in reply and two run-outs at a crucial stage saw them fall 13 short on 119 all out.

There was an excellent victory for Wessex Under 11s – a team consisting of ten state-school boys – over Bedfordshire B at Challow & Childrey.

Sam Siriwardene and Luke Taylor added 56 for the second wicket, while Ollie Chapple and Jake Smitten put on 34 for the sixth as Wessex posted 152-7.

A disciplined bowling performance, led by captain Jake Ayers (3-9) and Aston Hazell (2-18) helped dismiss Bedfordshire for 115.

There were mixed fortunes for Oxfordshire's women in their County Championship T20 double-header at Trowbridge.

In their first match against Wiltshire, they recorded a resounding nine-wicket victory after restricting the hosts to 71-7, Genny Porter taking 4-5 from her four overs.

However, in the second game, Cornwall rattled up 128-6, before Oxon were dismissed for 103.

Half-centuries from Andrew Hodder-Williams and Dave Warner helped Oxfordshire Over 50s B to a 71-run victory over Bedfordshire.

Warner (63no) and Hodder-Williams (63) lifted Oxon to 225-5, before Beds were restricted to 154-9.
