BERTIE Hopkin missed a last-gasp conversion as Chinnor were dramatically beaten 41-39 by Redingensians at Kingsey Road.

In a thrilling 80-point National League 2 South encounter, Matt Williams’ side just came short of earning a draw and making it three games without defeat.

The first half was an even affair with three tries apiece and never more than two points separating the sides.

Chinnor’s scores came from Jamie Townsend, Joe Vandermolen and Marcus Beer, with Hopkin converting all three.

But the visitors led 22-21 at half-time as Sean McDermottroe (2) and Olly Foxley crossed.

Luke Flower added six points with the boot.

Chinnor’s Greg Goodfellow was left to rue a missed opportunity on 23 minutes when, about to cross the try line unopposed, his hand caught the post protector and he dropped the ball.

In the second half, Redingensians piled on the pressure and Tom Vooght crossed for an unconverted try, before Oscar Heath replied.

The visitors were further rewarded as Robbie Stapley and Ben Henderson went over, the first converted by Flower.

Ben Manning’s unconverted try reduced their lead to 41-31, but with six minutes to go the match was coasting to an inevitable conclusion.

Hopkin kicked a penalty in an attempt to gain a losing bonus-point and a determined Chinnor went into overdrive as Townsend crossed on 80 minutes.

Fly half Hopkin’s conversion went wide, but referee Luke Haskins ordered for it to be retaken for early running from the visitors, but his attempt just sailed wide.

Jake Randall and Rob Bell scored two tries apiece as Henley Hawks ended a seven-match winless run with a 27-13 victory over Cinderford.

In a fixture involving National League 1’s bottom two clubs, Randall’s second-minute unconverted try put Hawks 5-0 ahead.

A James Moffat penalty reduced their lead, but the hosts made it 10-3 when Bell crossed following a maul.

Cinderford’s Nevaro Codlin went over as two points separated the sides at the break.

Hawks started the second half well, with Liam O’Neill and Bell crossing.

Ben Palmer converted the first score for a 22-8 lead.

The visitors replied through Alex Frame’s unconverted score, but Hawks made certain of victory when Randall forced his way over.
