Oxford University have made Varsity Match history by clinching a record sixth successive victory over Cambridge, with a 12-6 win at Twickenham.

Fly-half George Cullen kicked all of the Dark Blues' points to edge a tense encounter that, for all their effort and guile, they deserved.

With history on the line it could not have started any worse for Oxford as captain Henry Lamont was forced off after just four minutes following a heavy hit from Wales international Jamie Roberts.

This prompted a reshuffle with right wing Henry Hughes moving to inside centre and replacement Ed David entering the fray.

But after settling down, they were first on the scoreboard in the 13th minute, with Cullen slotting a penalty from 20 metres.

Cambridge were straight on the offensive and Oxford defended well to keep the Light Blues at bay, win a penalty and clear their lines.

The intensity of the match was for all to see and Don Stevens levelled the scores at 3-3 with a penalty on 25 minutes.

Oxford ended the half on top, but could not make their territory count as only a last-ditch tackle from David Spelman prevented second row Andrew Grant from crossing in the corner.

Apart from the early hit on Lamont, Oxford had kept Roberts quiet and the centre was taken off at half-time with a dead leg from that challenge.

The Dark Blues began the second period in the same vein, but after spending ten minutes inside the Cambridge half they were unable to put points on the board.

Cambridge took the initiative and David made a crucial interception to prevent a try, before a Stevens penalty gave them a 6-3 lead on 59 minutes.

Oxford responded immediately, creating their best opening, but Matt Geiger knocked on with the try line at his mercy.

With 13 minutes remaining, the Dark Blues continued to control proceedings and they got themselves back on level terms through a Cullen penalty.

And on 74 minutes, Oxford's efforts paid off as further pressure on the opposition resulted in a penalty and Cullen slotted the three-pointer for a 9-6 lead.

It looked to be their day, especially when Simon Davies was sin-binned for tackling an airborne Henry de Berker.

Cullen then kicked a fourth penalty with a minute remaining to ensure Oxford's place in the record books.
