Oxford University conceded eight tries as they were beaten 52-0 by Cambridge in the Women's Varsity Match at Twickenham.

The Dark Blues proved no match for the opposition, with full back Alice Middleton starring for Cambridge by scoring 27 points.

In the first game to be played at Twickenham in 27 years of the Women's Varsity Match, the Light Blues looked the more powerful and stronger outfit in the opening exchanges without breaking Oxford's defensive line.

But after a quick tap penalty from Anna Wilson, Cambridge had Chloe Withers and Lydia Thorn stopped short of the try line, before full back Middleton went over on 16 minutes.

Middleton converted her own try to make it 7-0.

Oxford were struggling to contain the Light Blues, with centres Anna Wilson and Emily McNally being afforded to much space and beating their first tackler at every occasion.

And on 31 minutes their second try arrived when right wing Lara Gibson outpaced three players to cross for an unconverted score.

Oxford improved, taking advantage of ill-discipline in the Cambridge ranks to break into the opposition's 22 for the first time, thanks to a probing run from Cecilia Peker, but they were penalised for entering a ruck from the side.

The Dark Blues started the second half on the front foot, but they were unable to make their territory count and Cambridge broke to score their third try.

Gibson made up good ground on the right and after Ciara Scott was stopped short the ball spilt kindly for Chloe Withers to dot down on 45 minutes.

Middleton added the extras to extend the Light Blues' lead to 19-0.

And it was soon 26-0 when a quick tap and go penalty led to Middleton crossing for her second, before she converted her own try.

Oxford were tiring and they were finished off in ten minutes of clinical play from Cambridge.

Wilson went over on 68 and 70 minutes, Middleton converting both, to make it 40-0.

The full-back then completed her hat-trick on 74 minutes, crossing for an unconverted score and Wilson then grabbed her third try.

Player of the match Middleton added the extras once again to finish Oxford off.
