Two late penalties from Connor Murphy saw National 2 South leaders Henley Hawks snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a pulsating 23-18 win at Old Elthamians.

The Kent-based hosts opened the scoring on their Chislehurst pitch with a Tom White penalty.

Henley fell further behind when Charlie Edwards won the race to touchdown wide out, and White converted before adding a penalty to make it 13-0.

Hawks hit back with Jimmy Litchfield going over following a driving maul to make it 13-5 at the break.

They moved within a point after replacement prop Dave Manning scampered 15 metres to score, with Murphy adding the extras.

However, Old Elthamians hit straight back when Renford Bennett collected White’s cross-kick on the bounce to score in the corner.

Murphy then darted over for a try, before kicking two penalties in the last four minutes to secure victory.

Chinnor slipped to a 22-14 defeat at Cambridge.

Full back James Stokes opened the scoring for the hosts with a penalty.

But Chinnor, who gave a debut to new signing Ashley Smith from Cornish Pirates on the wing, hit back when Ben Manning broke from a scrum to go over for a try, which Ed Keohane converted.

Cambridge replied with a Jim Wigglesworth try.

Chinnor struck next with Ruben Haile crossing the Cambridge line and Keohane landed the conversion to make it 14-8.

Cambridge responded just before the break with hooker Ean Griffiths charging over for a try, which Stokes converted to make it 15-14.

Chinnor lost Jaryd Robinson to the sin bin for a professional foul on the stroke of half-time, but they held firm after the restart.

And it wasn’t until the last minute that Chinnor’s fate was sealed when Matt Howling stormed in for a try from 30 metres, which Stokes converted.
