Oxford University made history with a record-breaking victory over Cambridge in the 133rd Varsity Match at Twickenham.

The Dark Blues made it five wins in a row for the first time and also beat the previous-best winning-margin of 32 points for the match, set in 1909.

Scrum half Sam Egerton, who scored his third try in successive Varsity Matches was named man-of-the-match, while fly half George Cullen also starred with 18 points.

After a minute's silence in memory of the 55 Blues who lost their lives in the First World War, it was Cambridge who made the better start.

They turned down an eminently kickable penalty before botching the resulting attacking line-out.

But it was Oxford who scored first - and it came literally out of the blue in the 11th minute.

The Dark Blues forwards drove through a ruck on halfway.

Egerton picked up the ball at the base and darted through a gap.

The scrum half then outpaced the remaining defenders and touched down following a 50-metre run for his third Varsity Match try. Cullen landed the conversion.

Cambridge got their first points on the board four minutes later, when fly half Don Stevens kicked a penalty from in front of the posts after the Oxford forwards had been penalised.

Cullen then restored Oxford's seven-point advantage with a penalty a minute later.

The Light Blues saw more of the ball in the first half and had long periods of pressure, but could not breach a solid Oxford defence.

All they had to show for their efforts was a second penalty goal from Stevens.

Just before half-time, Oxford had their only concerted attack of the half and made it count.

Centre Matt Janney and winger Henry Lamont were stopped inches short of the line, before centre Zandy MacDonald forced his way over close to the posts.

Cullen's conversion made it 17-6 at half-time.

There was a long delay early in the second half when Stevens was stretchered off with a serious injury.

Oxford got right on top in the second half and moved out of range with close-range tries from lock Tom Reeson-Price and prop Ian Williams as the Light Blues wilted.

Cullen converted the latter to make it 29-6 after an hour.

Cullen scored their next try with a mazy run, before winger Gus Jones, a former Oxford Harlequins player, scored their record-breaking sixth try in the last minute.

Cullen converted both for an 18-point tally.
