Oxford United manager Darren Patterson does not believe the three red cards his players have picked up in the first month of the campaign represent a lack of discipline at the club.

The U's look to have got their season back on track after two good results on their travels this week, with Tuesday night's 2-1 win at Northwich the first occasion they have played away and not had a man sent off in the first half.

But even before then, Patterson was insisting the club have tightened up on discipline this season, and there is a very strict policy on stepping out of line or if a player collects a needless yellow or red card.

Asked if James Clarke's dismissal at Barrow, and the early baths Luke Foster has had at Wrexham and Ebbsfleet mean there is a discipline problem at United, Patterson responded: "It isn't like that.

"I've spoken to Mick Brown andWe've actually put in extra measures this season.

"We had one of the worst disciplinary records last season for bookings, it was horrible. I looked at my team and thought 'have I got any nasty so-and-sos here?' and I haven't.

"I've actually asked them to be a bit more competitive, because at times we were bullied in the league.

"It's not something we've set out to do, we've actually put in disciplinary fines which hits them where it hurts - probably the hardest and harshest the club's ever had.

"Other than that, I just think we've been unfortunate. Referees have clamped down on the laws.

"All three challenges for me were dubious, they're all 50-50 apart from Foster's first one which, with the letter of the law now, if you stop a goalscoring chance, it's a mandatory sending-off."

So why then, when it happened against Oxford with the Northwich Victoria keeper, Scott Tynan, stopping a clear goalscoring chance when he fouled James Constable to concede the penalty this week, was he not sent off?

It does point to an anti-Oxford bias in the Blue Square Premier.

Patterson said: "I challenge anybody to come and watch our home games and do stats for us and against us, and I'll guarantee them the officials are against us. The stats show it.

"We coach in small-sided games and deliberately give ridiculously stupid decisions against the team, to make sure there's no reaction. They just accept it and get on with it, and we've done that all pre-season.

"I thought Clarkey's was a fair challenge and, as with Luke last Saturday, their boy didn't challenge with him, so it ends up looking bad. But they're both hard and fair challenges.

"However, we know we just can't do anything like that now. How that's going to affect us defensively, I don't know.

"So I hope fans will understand that, away from home, we can be a little bit tentative, because that's the way things are going.

"I had a very honest and calm discussion with the referee at Ebbsfleet last Saturday and I do generally believe that referees feel we are the big team and everybody who plays against are are the underdogs.

"Like the assessor said, 'you ARE a big club', and I said: 'So what?' That should not affect any judgment, especially at home.

"It's a beautiful, big stadium, no matter whether we're top or bottom of the league. The way I look at it is we're the underdogs now because most of the teams are above us!

"All we're asking for is 50-50 fair decisions, not a feeling sorry for the underdogs when we're at home.

"I understand there are going to be bad decisions made, and bad judgments. But not with the consistency that they have been made. That is simply not right."

What a rant!

So the BSP has an anti Oxford bias eh?

No doubt all the other clubs (and refs) arranged a secret meeting and conspired against poor old 'patto' What piffle!

Is it any wonder that Oxford suffer such poor discipline on the pitch if this is what they are fed off the pitch.

Darren Patterson has beeb in football long enough to know that over the course of the season the good and bad breaks even them self out.

It isn't clear whether Foster and Clarke have been disciplined if these decisions seemed dodgy. I hope this is not evidence that the new hard line is subject to internal interpretation.
Murray has been clear in the Press that he is ambivalent about the respect for referees agenda - nothing against the player, but he shouldn't be captain. There should be someone on the field able to clearly represent the players views reasonably, and act as a leader.
Even in the excellent win at Northwich, Haldane managed a stupid booking. The Club needs to be, and act, clearer.

Spot on Patto!

Everyone in this league officials included have got something against Oxford United, this probably comes from the fans attitude, the size of the ground, the attendances, ex league status and the history of the club.

But no matter what anyone says that is no reason to be unduly harsh when refereeing our games!

It is about time that our support and fan base became an advantage because at the moment the fans are the clubs biggest asset but also the biggest problem.

We need to make our superior attendance work for us not against us, so I urge every fan to appeal for every 50-50 decision tomorrow.

Maybe 4000 oxford fans screaming at the top of there voice every time a player goes down or the ball goes out of play could give us that extra set piece throwing or penalty that we would not normally get, this could be the difference between winning an loosing!

So as Patto has said and as has been said on this site a few times this week lets get nasty!

Shout scream and appeal for everything, maybe the ref might just buckle and give a free kick, penalty or even send a Kettering player off when really he should not!

Failing that get behind the players go home horse from the chanting and singing drown out the boo boys and maybe we will get the result the fans deserve!

I can understand Patto's point especially having seen the incident at Northwich where Tynan did have his arm around Constables neck and also earlier when a Northwich player so obviously knocked the ball out and then got the throw in, i do think that was partly because their manager loudly appealed for the throw when his player kicked the ball at him, the linesman was right on the spot but inexplicably gave them the throw, i can only assume he (the lino) thought he(the manager) wouldnt appeal for it if it was'nt their ball, how wrong he was, in that particular game as in the Wrexham game i thought our opponents bench won several dodgy decisions for their team by their loud appealing whereas the U's bench stays relatively silent if its less than 50-50. The officials at this level are very poor but i cant believe their is a vendetta against us tho if the official really did say to Patto "well you are the big club" then maybe the league need to be told and step in because all sides should be treated equally whether they have a big or small ground or large or small following otherwise its just not cricket, which of course it isnt!

A cynic might say that the quality of officals is no poorer by comparision, than that of the players in the BSP.

I believe pretty well every ref and lino at this level is savvy enough not to be swayed by partisan appealing from the benches.

The danger in treating each 50/50 as contestable,is that it is very easy to develope a percicussion mentality once a couple of decisions go against you.

Oxford are undoubtedly a big club in this league, and in my experience 'smaller clubs' WILL try to unsettle them.
