Patto hails Carruthers

Darren Patterson hailed Chris Carruthers after the left back became Oxford United's second signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old joined the U's just in time to be unveiled at their Open Day on Saturday, which saw around 2,000 fans turn out.

Carruthers made more than 70 starts for Northampton after progressing through the youth system, and was selected for the England under 20s side.

He then moved to Bristol Rovers in 2005 after a successful loan and made well over 100 starts for Rovers.

"Chris is another great pro who has bags of experience considering his age," Patterson said.

"Like Joe Burnell he has chosen us over a number of league clubs and we are really excited to have him join."

Despite only joining the club last week, Burnell has already got his hands on some silverware for the U's.

He was elected captain for the inaugural Oxford Mail fans v Oxford United penalty shoot-out, and helped his side to a 3-2 victory.

Although the pressure got too much for Adam Murray, who placed the very first attempt wide of the target, United bounced back to win the trophy.

Jay Harriott and Tony Snellgrove scored for the fans, with Luke Foster the other U's player not to find the net.

Pete Burton, Sean Cleaver and Thom Airs made up the fans' team.

Why the hell are signings hailed before we even see them play. Surely with any players we should reserve judgement until they have played.

because these are players that have proved themselves at a higher level than oufc

and have had offers on the table from bigger clubs than oufc in higher leagues

and have chosen to come to oufc

that means patto has worked hard to get the contract signed

that deserves credit

So why are they here then if they are a higher level. Is it that we have more money than we think and they are on high wages or are they just unambitious and want to be a big fish in a small pond?

Usually its which club has the fattest cheque book that gets the player rather than anything else. I thought we were hard up.

My point was we have hailed players previously before they have kicked a ball for us and they have turned out crap so lets not count our chickens too yet.

If we dont sign player people moan, if we sign players from non-league people moan and now if we sign player from clubs higher up people moan!

I personally think Patto a) has a ressonable budget and b) is obviously creting a good impression with players.

Things are moving forward - be happy!

I know let the manager build the club up to potential players, sign them, announce to the fans that he is average; may even say he lacks ambition and hey presto what do we have... yet another target for the whingers.

Sir I appload your man management.

I think people are over exadgerating Pattersons part in this he is a nobody! If you were an ambitious footballer I'm sorry but you would not pick Oxford United above league clubs.
I would prefer players from non league as they will be hungry. Players will not drop out of league just for fun they are doing it for the wages nothing else. We have too many players who are just here cos they get paid well and who think they don't have to try. Lets hope that the 2 players he has signed who everyone thinks are fantastic when they haven't seen them kick a ball are not like that.

er id say oufc have more chance of winning trophies than daggenham who are a league club, give it a couple of years and we will be above daggers - if your ambitious - youd join oufc over daggers any day

I can just see the headline "Patterson says he'll reserve judgement on his new players".

That would be a great headline wouldn't it? That would really sell some more papers! That would really give us and his new signings confidence and strike fear into the hearts of our opponents!

I also think Churchill should have been more reserved with his comments "we might fight them on the beaches, we might fight them in the hills, we hopefully won't surrender, it will depend on many factors..."

Unbelievable...

Oxford strike fear into opponents get a grip man that will never happen. Your living in a bloody dream world.

The Churchill thing is totally irrelavant.

All i was saying the signings of Jeanin, ledgister etc were all hailed and they turned out crap. People like you are the first people to go well ott and say brilliant fantastic players and then u will be first to slate them at least I am consistently cautious.

For goodness sake, guys, let's stop all this pointless, time-wasting exchange based on very little. On paper these are good signings and exactly what we'd have been looking for not long back. Please be more positive! We DO still need some more goals though, Darren, as well as shoring up back and middle (already some of the best).

Adj. 1. cretinous - afflicted with cretinism
retarded - relatively slow in mental or emotional or physical development; "providing a secure and sometimes happy life for the retarded"

Are you the fella who offers to give people a hand job out the back of the Bullnose Morris for the price of a half of bitter?

Just wondering, like.
