Oxford United manager Darren Patterson has been given a double boost on the eve of their Blue Square Premier opener at Barrow after striker Michael Husbands and midfielder Levi Reid agreed short-term deals.

The former Macclesfield duo, who have impressed on trial at United, yesterday put pen to paper and go straight into the squad for the trip to Cumbria.

Husbands, 24, was highly-rated as a youngster at Aston Villa and has had spells at Hereford, Southend, Bristol Rovers, Walsall, Port Vale and Macclesfield, scoring five times in 15 starts at those clubs.

Reid, also 24, began his career at Port Vale before dropping down to Stafford where his pace and skills earned a move back into the Football League with Macclesfield, where he scored twice in 28 starts.

It brings to nine the number of Patterson's summer signings, following the captures of Jamie Guy, James Constable, Rob Davies, Jake Cole, Ben Hinchliffe, Chris Carruthers and Lewis Haldane.

Patterson was desperately keen to strengthen his squad, particularly with first-choice keeper Billy Turley, Phil Trainer (broken foot) and now Guy (hamstring) all sidelined for several weeks.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe says he would have no qualms about making his debut should Patterson give him the nod to play at Barrow.

With Turley sidelined for the opening weeks of the season after a shoulder operation, Hinchliffe is fighting out the No 1 shirt with Jake Cole, who has signed on loan for three months from QPR.

Hinchliffe has impressed in the U's pre-season friendlies, the latest being 45 minutes against an almost full-strength Portsmouth side on Monday, before being substituted at half-time for Cole.

The 20-year-old former Derby County and Preston keeper was originally signed as cover for Cole, but now finds himself on the verge of his first-team debut thanks to some excellent pre-season displays.

"It's not really being thrown in at the deep end," said Hinchliffe, who recently signed a short-term deal with the U's. "I have also played in the Football League for Tranmere. I don't really think about who were are facing. I see it as 11 men against 11.

"It was a great experience to play against Portsmouth, but for me it was just another game.

"I spoke to David James after the game. He's an absolute legend and he will always help you out with advice if he can."

These are both good signings. Reid in particular has impressed me and hopefully we will be able to get him on a long term contract now Jeannin has left.

I think the signing of Reid is bad news for Yemi though - I think Reid will get the nod over Yemi on the wing woth Yemi probably being used as an impact player off the bench

Last season Yemi started way too many games (without Twigg and Duffy for lengthy spells there wasn't much choice), often where his confidence was obviously low. Some competition and fewer games will hopefully allow him to retain the sharpness he had for the last quarter of last season.

I am REALLY WORRIED about tomorrows game, a) it's on Setanta and we haven't won on Setanta, b)it's a long way and a horrible ground, c) Barrow will raise their game as they are playing OUFC, d) Barrow will be up for it anyway as it's their first game back in the Conference and e) their new signing Logan is absolute quality and lightning quick!

Really worried personally, can't see a positive OUFC result. Maybe I'm just nervous about the season. ;-(

Why do so many people "worry" about such little things? Is Oxford the choice club of professional worriers?

Patterson has somewhat proved himself, even if some think he did not when in his previous stint as manager.

Too many moan and worry about Oxford United... Do they really live such small, narrow lives?

It's been clear from day one that the new owners are far better managers than the previous owner and have put into place the right people. It was unfortunate that their plans did not succeed last year, but they had a plan B - and Patto was bound to have taken over sooner or later...

The focus should be on enjoying the ups and downs of the club and not worrying!

Utter tripe your talking re the owners. They had a plan B no they didn't thats why it took so long to move Jim upstairs cos they had no bloody plan B.
I do recall that the so called good new owners as you call them actually came in when Darren was in fact the manager and doing an ok job then they sacked him and thought a pensioner who had been out of management for many years would do a better job then suprise suprise we got relegated when we were a gd 6 or 7 points clear of relegation.
So to applaud them and say Darren was plan B is rubbish all they did was correct the mistake they made when they took over but unfortunately for us it took them about 2 years to correct it!
You say about enjoying ups and downs can you tell me what ups we have had with these new owners? I can't think of any.
