AN Oxford woman received praise from King George V for her family’s contribution to the war.

Mrs Lord, of Magdalen Road, had six sons and six nephews fighting the Germans — and a seventh son had fought in the South African war.

In a letter to her, the Keeper of the Privy Purse wrote: “I have the honour to inform you that the King has heard with much interest that you have at the present moment six sons and six nephews serving in His Majesty’s forces.

“I am commanded to express to you the King’s congratulations and to assure you that His Majesty much appreciates the spirit and patriotism which prompted this example, in one family, of loyalty and devotion to their sovereign and Empire.”
