A woman has warned an Oxford community to keep an eye out for dangerous dogs after her pet was set upon.
Sharon Walton's dog Toby was being walked by her friend June Tyrell at the Oxsrad Sports Centre field, off Marsh Lane, Marston, at about 1pm on July 14 when he was attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier.
Toby, a Yorkshire terrier, had to be rushed to a vet and needed 15 stitches in his neck and throat.
Ms Walton, 49, of Plowman Tower, Northway, said she now fears the bull terrier might attack again and warned people living in the area to be on the lookout.
She said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack. This dog just set on Toby and went straight for his throat.
"The vet told me he's lucky to still be alive. A few more inches either way and he would be dead.

"This sort of dog should not be allowed out in public off a lead, or without a muzzle, if this is the sort of thing he is going to do."

As a responsible owner of a staffordshire bull terrier I of course was upset to hear what had happened to your dog. It must have been awful. Can i just say though that a properly trained Staffordshire Bull terrier is one of the softest and friendliest breeds and can people try not to discriminate against this breed. Some owners have a lot to answer for and are giving this dog a very bad name. We send our thoughts to you

Unfortunately Staffies appeal to the most irresponsible and boneheaded owners who often encourage the dogs to be aggressive in order to cultivate a 'hard' image. A few years ago the same owners were buying Rottweilers and before that Alsatians.
Bring back the dog license I say.

It is an ANIMAL not a person. How on earth do you train something that by its very nature is very aggressive!!

It is an ANIMAL not a person. How on earth do you train something that by its very nature is very aggressive!!
I'm not defending the attack, all dogs should be properly under control at all times in public, I say all, my Doberman was set upon by a jack Russell, and currently they both have a very small terrier that comes running up and barking in an unfriendly manner, these dogs are not properly controlled by their owners, and my dobes have not even approached these littluns. My male dobe has got to be the sweetest natured thing I have ever known, the **** is just a little unsure of what to do when this happens as she just wants to protect herself, none of these occurrences have anything to do with her season, she hasn't even had one yet! But it does go to show that it's not just the "labelled" dogs that can cause a problem.

Hi its one of those so called boneheaded irrisponsible owners here. Before you start calling people names you need to get a grip if you think a licence will stop a dog from attacking. Decent owners know dogs are animals not people but they can still be trained better than some humans nowadays. Reasearch the breed before making your pathetic comments and judgements. A properly trained staffy makes the perfect family dog and as a mother of 5 who works full time is not a yob or interested in status symbols or not covered in tattoos i would never put my kids, family friends or general public at risk. I reasearched the breed completely before purchasing my pet. You are just as likely to have problems with a lab or yorkie who is in the hands of irrisponsible owner.
