SCHOOLGIRLS spread some Christmas cheer to the elderly yesterday by performing carols at four care homes across the city.

Year Seven girls from Headington School sang a range of traditional carols for residents and also performed on their instruments.

The school’s charity and community coordinator David Cunningham said: “There were 80 girls so they were split up into groups in different care homes.

“It was really sweet, the residents really enjoyed it and some were singing along. Some will not be going anywhere over Christmas, so it was nice to do something for them.”

He added that it was a learning experience for the pupils, as well as being beneficial for residents.

“The girls are quite young and it was hard-hitting for some of them to see people with dementia and things. I’m always trying to show them that charity is not just donating money.”

Townsend House care home activities coordinator James Fryett said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the stories about Cinderella and Rudolph read by the children.

“A lady we have here said that she used to work at the school, so it was nice for her to see them. The school said we might try to make it a regular thing.”
