YOUNGSTERS from 20 county primary schools sang in full voice to raise cash for Christian Aid this festive season.

Ten school choirs appeared on Tuesday and Wednesday night for the seventh Big Christmas Sing at Oxford Town Hall, in St Aldate’s.

The audience and children sang O Come All Ye Faithful, Once In Royal David’s City, Good King Wenceslas, Away In A Manger and Twelve Days of Christmas.

In between, schools got to perform a song or carol each such as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, sung by Witney’s Springfield School, and Winter Wonderland, sung by Beckley Primary School.

Headteacher Jeanette Millward, above, said: “It was a wonderful event. We all enjoy singing together in a way that brings all the school together.

“It really raises the profile of music across the country, especially for pupils who take part.”

The event was organised by Oxfordshire County Council’s music service and Christian Aid, which has received almost £10,000 from previous years.

This year’s event is expected to raise £2,600 and charity regional co-ordinator Sarah Clay said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for those children to sing in a choir of 250 kids.”

Wednesday’s show followed the same programme as the previous night, with the audience and children singing a host of well-known carols.

Schools split to to perform individual songs, such as The Holly and the Ivy, sung by Watlington Primary School, and Miracle Child, sung by Windmill Primary School, Headington.
