OXFORD’s Lord Mayor Rae Humberstone cut the cake at a Headington building society’s first birthday party.

Staff and dozens of customers joined city councillor Mr Humberstone for sherry and mince pies at Skipton Building Society’s anniversary bash on Tuesday.

Sharon Ogden, manager of the branch in London Road, said: “He mingled with the customers and we gave him £150 for his three chosen charities. He explained what each of the charities do.”

The charities – Blackbird Leys Adventure Playground, the Parasol Project and TRAX – will each receive £50 from Skipton.

The Oxford branch of the national building society moved to Headington last December, after spending years in the High Street.

Ms Ogden said: “We felt there was a little bit more of a community feel in Headington. We knew we might lose a few customers who don’t want to take the extra bus journey from town, but our plan is to support the local community.”

The branch, which currently has five staff members with one vacancy, has a good relationship with local schools and businesses, which it invited along to the party.

Ms Ogden said: “There’s nothing worse than someone having a party across the street with the Lord Mayor and not knowing about it.”
