TRAGEDY strikes in the latest production at the Oxford Playhouse with the audience left to find out whodunnit.

English Touring Theatre actors have returned to the theatre with the Somerset Maugham thriller The Sacred Flame, which opened at the Beaumont Street venue on Tuesday and runs until tomorrow.

The play, featuring Margot Leicester, right, as Mrs Tabret, and Beatriz Romilly, left, as her daughter-in-law, is directed by Matthew Dunster, whose previous credits include Mogadishu, which visited the venue earlier this year.

Ms Romilly, 29, from Spain, said: “A lot of the humour in the play is born out of tragedy, as the characters try to make light of a difficult situation, and the audiences have been responding so well. I think what makes Oxford audiences so special is that they are not afraid to express themselves.”
