DIGGERS have rolled in to start work on the latest stage of the £6m redevelopment of Oxford’s Clarendon shopping centre.
The former Currys Digital shop is being demolished to make way for a new three-storey building, for top fashion chain H&M.
Preparatory work for demolition is now under way at the Shoe Lane entrance.
Centre managers Lothbury say construction of a new H&M store will start in January, with the shop opening early in 2014.
Director Adam Smith said: “We are confident that H&M’s presence will bring in a lot of additional shoppers.
Centre manager Graham Atkinson said: “We are giving tenants regular updates.”
The refurbishment means the centre is growing in size by about 10 per cent. As part of the revamp, Currys Digital has moved to the former River Island store.
There are also plans to expand Westgate shopping centre by 2017, to bring in John Lewis , new shops and replace the multi-storey car park.
