A DRINK-driver has been jailed for dragging a police officer along a city centre street with a car.

Faisal Shaukat, of Normandy Crescent, Oxford, was driving his father’s black Mercedes 4x4 when he was stopped by police in Hythe Bridge Street on February 12.

The 22-year-old had been thrown out of The Bridge nightclub for being too drunk at about 1.30am.

A doorman called police when he recognised Shaukat driving past the club later that night at about 3am.

Police attended the scene shortly after and approached the vehicle.

When Shaukat was asked by Pc Neil Streeter to turn off the engine and get out he did not respond.

And when the policeman opened the car door to get the ignition key out, Shaukat drove off, taking Pc Streeter down the road with him.

Allister Walker, prosecuting at Oxford Crown Court, said: “The police constable was dragged five to 10 metres before he fell on the ground.

“His legs were dragged alongside the vehicle and his foot was run over.”

Pc Streeter was not injured and helped to arrest Shaukat in Jericho about 50 minutes later.

Tests found Shaukat had 50 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of his breath, above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

Shaukat, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to drink- driving and driving without insurance, was sentenced to six months in prison and banned from driving for three years.

The court heard he has previous convictions for drink- driving and driving while disqualified.

Sentencing, Judge Christopher Compston said: “I have no doubt there is a lot of good in you, but my goodness you have done this sort of thing before.

“What might have happened to these officers is pretty chilling.

“You behaved disgracefully, there is no doubt about it.”

Jonathan Coode, defending, said the case had brought shame on Shaukat’s family who run a convenience store in Jericho.

He also said the police officer could have let go of the vehicle earlier.

But he added: “Thankfully nobody was hurt and that is perhaps good fortune, and perhaps the quality of the steel capped boots.”

He added: “There is no doubt there was an element of showing off, driving a car like that.

“He knows he shouldn’t have done it and he is sorry.”

Shaukat will have to take a driving test before getting behind the wheel again.
